Zara

Zara, a flagship brand of the Spanish multinational company Inditex, has become a global fashion phenomenon since its inception in 1974. Founded by Amancio Ortega Gaona, Zara is known for its fast-fashion approach, offering trendy and affordable clothing with quick turnaround times from design to store shelves. ZARA adopted as its first trademark in 1975 when it opened its first ship in La Coruna, Spain and the domain name was registered in 1997.

Zara demonstrates a proactive approach to monitoring and enforcing its trademarks. While specific recent examples of trademark lawsuits may vary, major fashion retailers often engage in legal actions to protect their intellectual property. Zara has taken legal measures against entities attempting to misuse its brand or engage in activities that could dilute the Zara name. In 2015, a leading chain of restaurants called “Oriental Cuisines PVT Ltd” found itself in trouble when it used the name “ZARA’s tapas bar” for one of its restaurants in Chennai, India. The restaurant claimed that it was using ZARA with the best of intentions, however, ZARA claimed that it was simply trying to free ride on the goodwill and reputation of ZARA. In 2021, Zara filed an opposition against ZARAHA BEAUTY CO., LTD., a Japanese company, registering the wordmark “ZARAHA” for retail services for beauty care cosmetics.
